1) scanner darkly
where do i begin? i failed to watch this flick 4 times, why? because i fell asleep after 10 minutes. the film is so draggy and confusing, the animation doesn't do it justice. i think there's just too much going on and the plot is not established very well. the problem was association with characters, it became so tedious to follow them because the rotoscope technique blended the hues to closely together. only for fans of philip k. dick, i don't see anything new after waking life. so if you are into true to life animation with fucked up story adaptations then this is the one for you, otherwise stay away.
2) deja vu
i spent half my cinematic experience trying to figure out why this flick is similar to a TV series called "Numb3rs" then it hit me. the director tony scott (brother of ridley scott) directs "Numb3rs". i felt like i was watching a TV series in a cinema which would have been a waste of my fucking money. The storyline is not new, the "what if you can change the past so that it affects the present" has been heavily exploited since TV series Quantum Leap and Back to the Future, which was still the best time travelling flicks ever. although i did like voyagers the tv series. the whoel time & space bending theory fucking reminded me of my MA, so i switched off for most part of the show. maybe try the DVD later.
3) evil bong, slither, crank and DOA
the reason why all 4 flicks are reviewed as 1 because it's really pathetic that i have so much time on my hands i had to resort to mindless storylines. i didn't even finish evil bong for the reason it reminded me of the 70's cheech & chong flicks. dudes, it's been 30 years. i love cheech & chong and i have their up in smoke because to me it's such a cult classic. 15 minutes into evil bong, i was clammering for the stop button. Slither fare better, i actually finished it, bad acting & directing at least it had some boobs in it. I like jason statham because he's the typical english anti-hero bad arsehole persona, Guy Ritchie knows how to use his persona but it seemed a little wasted in Crank. There were a lot of directing styles similar to Guy Ritchie but dude, it's time to develop your own style. DOA should actually be called T&A for tits & ass, it's every schoolboy fantasy movie, women with bounce even you exercise ball would be shy of (no im not talking about their hair); you know all videogame genre's can never be ported to movies, case in point - streetfighter, alone in the dark, resident evil, silent hill, and now DOA. worth the eye candy but if you're looking for your intelligence level to improve. duh!
4) casino royale
all the hype about a blond bond, blah blah blah. you know what, i defy convention and say i like this bond. The best bond is and will always be Sean Connery, after that there has never been anyone toppling him. Daniel Craig puts in a really good performance as a rookie double 'o'; he makes mistakes, he is naive, he uses his muscles rather than his thought, drinks whiskey instead of martini (when asked about his vodka martini - shaken or stirred? he replies "do i look like i care?"), falls in love with a traitor and shoots before he asks questions. Put very eloquently, "so you want me to be half mug, half spy". He represents an antitheses of what james bond is and was. i think i like the direction this is headed and will probably watch it a second time. Very watchable despite what everyone says about a blond bond, so what? it's just hair colour.
5) borat
i can see why americans are suing his british arse, the image of americans is tarnished (not that it wasn't already). i laughed my head off because that is how i perceive americans to be. The image hollywood tried so hard to build - the american dream and patriotism went down the drain thanks to one Kazak (well sort of). I asked someone why she wouldn't watch borat, she replied "it's not my kind of humour", she gave me the same answer for any of jack black's films. 1st of all, Borat's humour isn't like arrogant Ali G, it's the responses he gets from interviewees that makes borat. So this is reality tv without tribal councils. Recommended just because this makes America not the BIG brother but rather the ignorant and dumb relative you rather not have.
