i just came back from the show "fast food nation" by richard linklater. if you had ever read the book by eric schlosser, the fictionalised story is quite intense, questioning what the fuck we put in our mouth's everyday.
The movie stars wilmer valderama (fez from the 70's show) with greg kinnear and guests bruce willis, patricia arquette, luis guzman and avril lavigne (oh brother!). It tries to move away from the book and tackle issues like immigrants, sweat shops, cattle farming, drugs, honesty, loyalty ..... i think it's tackling too much, so much so it becomes confusing what the film is trying to say.
the subliminal implications of mcdonalds in 3 scenes (that i know of), sexual harrasment and the fact that 'spit' burgers do exist makes thinking a little unchallenged and almost like "this is a film to support supersize me"; the graphic scenes at the end - shows the process of how the cattle gets numbed brain fry - conveyed to blood drain - be heading - skin separation - de boning is disturbing but after 2 days it won't stop me from ordering that steak. i guess i was sort of conflicted with the message the director was trying to portray for the cattle, yes it is inhumane the way cows are killed but yet the demand for burgers outweighs that conscience. will humans give up their obsession for a old fashioned hamburger? fuck no!
the people are attacking mcdonalds no doubt, but the way cattle is killed, can be said the same about how chickens are killed or how fish is gutted. so wany way you look at it, some people aren't contented until all of use become fucking vegetarians. well i love my meat and i probably not stop loving it.
when you get hungry during the day and wonder why the garden salad isn't pulling its weight? maybe because there is no weight and substance.
