the art of acca + end of an era

i realised that not many would understand what i'm blabbering about when i wrote that i struck the acca.

acca's are sports bet accumulators from betting agencies. They can range from football (...sorry soccer), basketball, golf, tennis etc. Accumulators work on accumulating the odds of your selection.

e.g.
middlesborough to win @ Anfield pays $6.50
everton to win @ old trafford pays $10
portsmouth to win @ white hart lane pays $7.50

so a minimum of $5 bet gets you - 5 X 6.50 X 10 X 7.50 = $2437.5

not bad huh? for a $5 bet. the catch is ... all 3 bets must win. the difference between 3 single bets and acca's are, with singles if 1 out of 2 games goes tits up, you lose only $5 and profit from the 2 winning bets. With Acca's, you get a duck egg. comprende? but with single bets you don't get the accumulation. bookies are out to make $$$ as well, y'know?

the trick is not to look for low paying odds but to study the game, stats and recent club form. Stay away from dangerous games i.e. portsmouth with new manager Harry Redknapp playing away to Martin Jol's Spurs because you will never know how Harry affects the boys espcially temperamental Laurent Robert. And remember that home ground advantage with LOUD supporters plays a very BIG role in football games e.g Arsenal losing 2-0 at Bolton last week.

there is no easy way to make money from acca's, just lots of research, luck and sometimes gut feelings.

with that said, if you managed to catch champions league matchday 6 at Lisbon, you would have never thought Manchester United in 11 years would be out of European football. Now this may seem harmless to others but for MU the price is royalties from TV appearances (see TCM did help me understand the game). Roy Keane would be laughing @ his former employers, Georgie would have shed a tear, Eric Cantona would have kung fu kicked Gary Neville to at least block GeoVanni's blistering header instead of rooted to the pitch, Peter Schmiechel might have saved Beto's deflected scorcher but you know what? MU are out of European football for the first time in over a decade. woo hoo ..oops..it should be boo hoo ;P

Hah. many who know me, know that i'm no MU fan by any means; but even a neutral footy fan could see that MU were faced with 10 cristano ronaldo's on the field with fast paced counter attacks and the MU back four never had a chance to catch them as most of them were trying to score goals. Even Ronaldo cracked under Benfica fans whistles and boos. The missing ingredient? Roy Keane in midfield, sorry but alan smith just doesn't cut it, sorely missed Argentine Gabriel Heinze and playmaker Ronaldinhno supplying and scoring.

The standout team by far is Lyon, which may very well be my choice to take this title; of course they haven't met Barca or AC Milan or Chelsea even.
