HOLA

i have 10 minutes in hand.

this is a hectic week; apart from whiny students bitching about why they have to submit a digital assignment when they're not interested in ART; this week has just been blood ,sweat & tears.

This week's Rants

1. Whiny Students
NOTE: if you're offended, you're probably a 1st year student. Wait a year or get over it.

i never liked teaching year one students; their youthful excurberance gets the better of them. Now i was 18 once in my lifetime, i was a 1st year student as well. I never bitched about un-related assignments, i just did them. This of course doesn't sit well with kiwi kids. Quick lesson - as Mick Jagger licks on the mic "You Can't Always Get Whatcha Want!" The surprising thing is, the one getting on my nerves is a 26-year old. Ditzy rugby cheerleader, just bought a computer. So naturally i asked why hadn't she began her work. She replied "Well because i have a 40% journalism paper to finish and i couldn't be bothered with your 12.5% paper". Boo Fuckin Hoo; since we're comparing campus workload - i have tons of MA research practice experimentations to catch up, Abstract thesis to write and update, 200 page readings to read, 3 fucking papers to teach on 4 days and why do i put up with your crap? because i'm have fucking responsible to students and like students have responsibility to meet their deadlines irrespective if you dislike the paper.

i recall a conversation in the lifts amongst teeny J-Lo wannabes, "I don't even understand why were learning ART (meaning learning photoshop)" Hello?? even my 1 year niece knows how to smile when i launch photoshop (because of the colours). Irrespective of industry, learning something new and accepting it isn't fucking uncool. * then again i just had a thought, it's these same people that employ me for a weekend crash course tutorial; so they're actually payingme for something they've learnt before. ST_P_D (wanna buy a vowel?)

2. RUDE
if you're 18-19, it's not a license to be rude. i hate people who interrupt me when im talking to someone else especially when im consulting students. There's a kiwi kid that could be mistaken for a dumber version of Butthead (from Beavis & Butt-Head), he interrupts me consulting a student to ask me how to scan an image. How idiotic can someone be? we're in the 20th Century and you don't know how to scan images? where the fuck were you born? .... wait .... ahhh that's why.

* hey idiot! take a bath, for heaven's sake!

3.Complacency
i had a very interesting reading group this week, i was 20 mins late for the reading group ( i missed timed it) but instantly there was a discussion about how NZ is 30 years behind all developing countries in terms of accepting R&D expenditure. He goes on to relate that in the 1980's you could only find 3 shops in Auckland to buy imported leather shoes. How sad! Apparently things hasn't chnaged much.

this morning's methodology fiasco began with a stand that "design is now an industry and the motivating factor is MONEY" it apparently didn't sit well with the some. Here's an explanation - "Practical work creates VISION, not 're-thesaurus'ing old ideas", you can be a theorist and read text written 30 years ago but that's like driving looking through your rear view mirror. What happens after, you'll meet an accident head on. Head on is what every designer needs to look at not fucking shackled to old ideas and theories. Others (names deleted) did not agree and mentioned that theory builds design.

i believe design is a business, gone are the days where the phrase "for the sake of art ..." makes money. you can use it .. on a five foot way. Someone said "employers are asking designers, how much can you make me in a year?"
